Personally I think Eugene was old enough to have known at least one of his parents (like you suggested) before he came to live at the orphanage, because how else would he know (and be embarrassed by) his real name? XD
The Fitz prefix to surnames means ‘son of’ and also used for illegitimate sons of princes/ titled nobility, so….
